CAN FD light

Low-cost CAN FD protocol

CAN FD light | Low-cost CAN FD protocol

CAN FD light, a commander/responder network approach intended for simple actuator and sensor networking.

CAN FD light uses a subset of the CAN FD protocol standardized in ISO 11898-1:2024.

The CAN FD light responder is standardized in ISO 11898-1:2024 Annex A and don’t need an accurate external crystal and so reduces the system cost.

All CAN FD and CAN XL protocol controller can be a CAN FD light commander.

Benefits

Filling the gap between CAN FD and Ethernet

New lost-cost CAN standard

Enable SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) for the end-node

Physical Layer

CAN FD light will be operable with all transceivers:

  • Classical CAN up to 1Mbit/s
  • CAN FD up to 2Mbit/s
  • CAN SIC up to 5-8Mbit/s

Status

CAN FD light responder is standardized in the ISO 11898-1:2024 Annex A.

In addition, many other CAN related standards will be updated simultaneously to support CAN FD light.

Examples are the CAN Conformance Test according to ISO 16845 and the physical layer which is released as ISO 11898-2:2024.

Key Protocol Features

Net data rates up to 8Mbit/s

Reduced cost due to reduced complexity:

  • CAN FD frame format with 11 Bit ID used, No 29 Bit ID,
  • No arbitration,
  • No error frames
  • No BRS bit rate switch, ...

Mandatory License of CAN Protocols

Mandatory License of CAN Protocols

The CAN Protocols are patented products developed by Robert Bosch GmbH.

A CAN Protocol License is required for all implementations of CAN FD, CAN FD Light, TTCAN and CAN XL modules.
