Dual semiconductor sales approach for maximum flexibility
From integrated systems to individual chips
Bosch has been developing and producing semiconductor components for more than 60 years. Combined with its deep automotive expertise, this heritage has made the company one of the top suppliers for integrated semiconductor systems. But of course, Bosch also sells semiconductors directly. In fact, many customers – OEMs as well as Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers – already profit from this dual approach.
From MEMS sensors to automotive ICs right through to IP modules and SiC MOSFETs – Bosch produces many semiconductors that are crucial for today’s driving experience. The initial strategy consisted in building a functioning and robust internal supply chain for these automotive components that make up a large part of our business. While the demand for integrated systems is still high, a new trend has developed in parallel.
Dual strategy as the key to succes
Today, many OEMs are moving away from depending solely on a single supplier for key semiconductors in their Electronic Control Units (ECUs). Instead, they are setting up their own development and supply chain competencies to strengthen their understanding and architectural lead in vertical integration. They are increasingly seeking standardized components, including semiconductors. This approach will help them maintain independence, especially during crisis situations.
Bosch therefore adopted a dual strategy for its semiconductor business: on the one hand, vehicle manufacturers, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers as well as distributors are addressed directly. On the other hand, chips and sensors are still integrated into our own products and systems. In both cases, OEMs and Tier suppliers benefit from Bosch’s decades of experience in the automotive sector and in semiconductor production.
Enhancing semiconductor production globally
This makes Bosch one of the few semiconductor manufacturers in the world to be so flexibly positioned. For example, SiC MOSFETs are available in the form of bare dies, discretes, and power modules. Additionally, they are integrated into other components such as the eAxle or the charger-converter, which combines DC/DC converter and on-board charger.
Automotive manufacturers benefit from maximum flexibility and the global support of a reliable partner at eye level. And we still aim to serve our many customers even better every day.
The expansion of our international production network helps us to further increase the resilience of our supply chains and ensure greater availability of automotive semiconductors.
