From Concept to Series Production
Expert Perspective: Gregor Sunderdiek, Group Manager IP Products
What exactly does your role involve?
I lead a team of technical experts and product managers and am responsible for our CAN and GTM IP products. In this role, I oversee our IP products throughout their entire lifecycle – from the initial idea and development to commercialization. IP stands for intellectual property and refers to products developed in a hardware description language. Our customers, for example developers for system-on-chips (SoC), microcontroller, or application specific standard parts (ASSP), integrate our IP products in their semiconductor products. My primary focus is on close collaboration across the team, with development, sales, and our customers to bring high-performance, customer-oriented IP solutions into series production.
What are the key decisions you make in your role every day?
When developing IP products, the goal is to achieve the optimal balance between functionality, IP size, performance, and diverse customer requirements. Based on this, we make architectural and feature decisions to enable the efficient implementation of, for example, our new CAN (Controller Area Network) controller “XS_CAN” in customer designs. The “XS_CAN” is our latest CAN controller which supports all ISO 11898-1 protocols, including the CAN XL protocol which will become increasingly important for the automotive industry in the future.
What makes your role unique, and what motivates you most about it?
What makes this role special is the close collaboration with development teams, field application engineers, project management, system experts, sales teams, and customers. I am motivated by driving technical concepts forward – from the initial specification through to successful integration into customers’ series products – and ultimately seeing these products succeed in the market.
How do our customers benefit from this overarching expert function?
Our customers benefit from technologically mature IP products. The close integration of all the functions involved enables us to respond quickly to technical challenges and offer robust solutions for customer-specific requirements.
How does your expertise help make customer projects more successful?
My experience in the semiconductor industry helps me identify system and integration challenges early on. Together as a team, we define IP products with exactly the features that are relevant for specific vehicle architecture and application.
Which technological trends are currently shaping your field and will continue to do so in the future?
Security requirements have increased significantly, particularly due to new E/E architectures in vehicles. Today, security is an integral part of IP definition and must be considered early in design and architectural decisions.
How do you collaborate with other areas of the company to drive innovation?
We work closely with customers, end customers, and other Bosch divisions to understand new system requirements at an early stage. These insights flow directly into the definition of new IP products that address our customers’ specific technical challenges.
